How to Use NAVER Map in English: Subway and Bus Routes in Korea

Can you use NAVER Map in English?

Yes. NAVER Map offers an English interface, but switching languages does not make every place name or listing English. Set the app language first, keep the Korean address of your hotel, then practise a public transport route with a starting point in Korea.

This mobile guide takes you from an exact place search to the platform or bus stop, the station exit and the final walk. If you are planning from home, change the starting point manually rather than leaving it at your current location.

1. Set the language: Android and iPhone use different menus

The app supports Korean, English, Japanese and Simplified Chinese. The setting works differently on Android and iPhone.

No language option on iPhone? Open device Settings → General → Language & Region and add English to your preferred languages, then check NAVER Map’s language setting again. Choose the app’s language there; you do not need to treat this as a request to change your whole phone interface.

2. English search failed? Use the Korean name or address

Major sights are usually searchable in English, but small cafés, pop-ups, salons, and temporary events may use inconsistent romanization. Copy the Korean business name or road address from the official Instagram page, website, or booking message.

On the place page, confirm the branch name, photos, hours, and date of recent reviews. This helps you avoid a different branch or a location that has closed.

A search for 경복궁역 finds Gyeongbokgung Station. If you want the palace, select 경복궁 and include the final walk. Keep your hotel’s Korean address in a note as well as its name: you can show it to a taxi driver or someone helping with directions.

3. Try Seoul Station → Gyeongbokgung, with the correct starting point

This is a practice search, not a fixed itinerary with a permanent line, fare or duration. Use it to learn how to read the route currently shown in your app.

1. Search 경복궁 and open the palace’s place page.
2. Open directions and confirm the palace is your destination.
3. Type 서울역 into the starting-point field and select Seoul Station.
4. Choose public transport, rather than the car or walking mode.
5. Compare time, transfers and walking sections, then open a route.
6. Read the boarding station or stop, direction, get-off point, exit and final walk.

Planning from outside Korea? Enter the starting point manually. Without a specified origin, the app uses your current location. Replace your overseas location with the Korean hotel, station or airport terminal you will leave from. You can also search for an origin or select a point on the map when GPS is inaccurate in Korea.

Before you leave the hotel, open the route details rather than relying on the summary time. Identify the stop or platform you need, the direction of travel and where you get off. After that, check the exit and walking section. This turns a route on the screen into a journey you can follow.

4. Read the route: transfers, walking, direction and fares

Transit results offer best-route, least-time, least-transfer and least-walking ordering. Check the all, bus and subway tabs too: combined bus-and-subway routes are in the all-results tab.

Bus stops with the same name can be on opposite sides of the road. Match the stop ID and the next stop on the route, not just the English name. On the subway, match the route’s direction with the platform signs rather than relying on line color alone. Check the exit before your train reaches the destination station.

The estimated duration includes walking and boarding or transfer waits as well as time on the vehicle. Leave a buffer for airports and timed events. Fares can vary with transport and payment arrangements; searching for a route does not issue a ticket.

Stopping at a café before a sight? Public-transport search does not support intermediate waypoints. Search hotel → café and café → sight separately. Check both legs before choosing the order: a convenient first stop can still leave you with a long second journey.

5. Check the station exit and the final walk

A route to the station is not the whole trip to the venue. Zoom into the final walking section and check the exit, road crossings and building entrance. If your location marker jumps underground, use the station’s numbered exit signs first, then compare the map with nearby buildings once outside.

Walking-only search offers recommended, main-roads-first and avoid-stairs options. With luggage or a stroller, compare avoid stairs. It avoids stairs and escalators but does not certify a fully accessible route: check the actual elevators, works and entrances along your path.

6. Fix a wrong location, empty search or incorrect travel mode

Find location permission in Android device Settings → NAVER Map → Permissions → Location, or iPhone device Settings → NAVER Map → Location. A passport-verification request during a booking is a separate issue from map location; use the linked booking guide.

7. Save places and routes with a NAVER account

Sign in to your NAVER account and use the star (☆) on a place page to save it. Group your hotel, venues and cafés into a trip list; find them in the bottom save tab’s place lists.

Save a route through the more (⋮) menu after searching, then reopen it in the saved-route list. An account bookmark and a phone screenshot serve different purposes. A screenshot keeps the address and exit readable when data drops; search again before leaving for current route and arrival information.

For a first-day list, save your hotel, the first attraction and a meal stop. Check the branch before adding it: a familiar English brand name alone may not identify the location you booked. Keep the hotel’s Korean address separately so you can show it when asking for help.

8. Keep addresses and exits available if your connection drops

Screenshot the airport-to-hotel route, Korean address, transfer stations, and exit numbers. Live map and arrival data need connectivity, so arrange an eSIM, SIM, or roaming before you need directions.

When asking for help, showing the Korean place name and address on the detail page is usually faster than explaining the destination in English.

9. Use translated reviews, then check today’s opening hours

NAVER Map provides Papago-powered translation for Korean reviews. It is helpful for menus, atmosphere, and waiting times, but automatic translation can miss nuance. Look at recent receipt-verified reviews and repeated comments rather than relying on one star rating.

Holiday hours and temporary closures may not match the listing. For a long journey, check the venue’s official social account on the day.

10. Booking, coupons and passport checks are separate steps

The Booking tab brings together nearby options that can be reserved, including restaurants, hair salons, amusement parks, one-day classes, and train tickets. If a place page shows a booking or ordering label, check the in-app steps before worrying about making a phone call in Korean.

The Discover tab may also surface recommendations and coupon offers. Availability varies, so check the dates, participating branch, minimum spend, and support for overseas cards on the final screen.

Some bookings or orders require identity verification. Foreign visitors can use passport verification for supported services, but successful verification does not guarantee that every booking or overseas-card payment will work.
