Netflix’s new Korean series The Scandal premieres globally on September 18. Son Ye-jin, Ji Chang-wook and NANA lead the cast, with Jung Ji-woo, known for films including Eungyo and Heart Blackened, directing.
Set in Joseon-era Korea, the story centers on Lady Cho, who refuses to be confined by the rules imposed on women; Cho Won, a notorious playboy; and Hui-yeon, who becomes caught in their dangerous wager. Netflix describes the series as a new Korean reimagining of the 1782 French novel Dangerous Liaisons.
The hook is more than romance in beautiful period costumes. The tension comes from people pursuing desire inside a society built around rank, marriage and strict expectations of gender. The teaser puts the relationship among the three leads — and the wager connecting them — at the center.
If this is your first Korean historical drama, it may help to watch beyond the costumes and sets. Social rank, marriage rules and the restrictions placed on men and women can explain why seemingly small choices carry such high stakes.
